CANDIDATE STATEMENT

I have been on the CUSD Board for the last 4 years. I am a professor at Chico State with over 38 years of experience working at all levels of higher education for the State of CA. I have also held positions appointed by the Governor to the CSU Board of Trustees and to California Postsecondary Education Commission for the State. My responsibilities have covered programs to reach out to various groups from Junior high to Senior high and Community Colleges in areas of Underserved populations, Achievement Gap, Teaching grants, CTE programs and transfer. But the focus for the last four years has been how to keep CUSD fiscal solvent in the State's mandated framework of 3 consecutive years. We have struggled in this regard with the state's reductions in funding, drops in enrollment due in part to the economy and to the emergence of charters. I am committed to fiscal responsibility as a absolutely critical feature of being on the board, since if the state were to take over the district it would be in effect for 25 years and would be very determinal to a very high functioning district! During my time on the board we have built the first new buildings at both high schools, we have won numerous awards including at the national and state level, we have had teachers recognized for outstanding work at state and regional levels, and we have been able to increase the impact of every dollar we spend by grants and state funding programs. We have been able to get an agreement with both of our unions that makes us hopeful that the great work of our teachers, staff and students will continue under the board's direction. I believe that I have been a critical part of that success and I ask for your continued support.
